Two years ago I was 220 pounds and could out lift all most any person on my undergraduate campus. I competed in collegiate powerlifting and was undefeated in each competition, thanks to my coach Chris Neff who is ranked 13th in the nation. I relied heavily on my lower body strength and focused primarily on the deadlift as my heaviest lift. I’ve been blessed with great leg and hip strength and have always focused on sports that required those talents. Furthermore, I have mostly focused on fast twitch sports such as football and track. I played football and ran track at Fork Union Military Academy. It was a Christian boarding school and I went there for six years. Overall, we won the football state championship my senior year and my track team won the indoor and outdoor state champions ships for each year that I was on the varsity team (1999-2003). What is amazing is the transition that my body has gone through with the various sports I compete in.
Now that I am getting my Phd in Criminology I wanted to incorporate some sport as an activity to keep my body in check. Therefore my wife suggested that we purchase road bikes. You can read on that transition below. This blog will focus on my goals for next season. Specifically, I want to drop my weight down to 170-175. I’m walking around at 190 and am still carrying a lot of muscle in my upper body. Hopefully, I can burn off a lot of that over the winter. I believe that it will help my performance if I can maintain my power output while dropping weight. Secondly, I want to compete in the ECCC collegiate conference and Cat 5/4 races during the summer. I’m hoping to get a tri bike over the winter and I want to compete in a lot of time trials during the summer. I’m really looking forward to improving my endurance and speed over the winter. Stay tuned for updates.
